The Owen County Rescue Team (OCRT) was formed in response to a tragic crash on US Highway 231 in September 1976, which claimed the life of Allen Hall, a young Gosport resident. The incident, and the rescue of Hall’s passenger, revealed a serious need for emergency rescue services in the county. What followed was a grassroots effort to establish the county’s first rescue team — a mission that has continued for more than 45 years.
In the aftermath of the accident, local businesses, Delta Theta Tau Sorority, and the former Spencer Jaycees initiated the Allen Hall Memorial Fund. Through this fund, basic rescue tools and a used truck were purchased, laying the foundation for a volunteer rescue team.
Evolving Capabilities
Over the decades, automobile extrication techniques have evolved from basic tools like pry bars and wrecker cables to advanced hydraulic equipment such as Hurst Jaws of Life, cutters, spreaders, and rams. With this upgraded equipment and a team of dedicated volunteers, OCRT has saved numerous lives and prevented additional injuries during emergency responses.
Rescue Equipment

In 1997, a major milestone was reached when the team, with community support, acquired a new F350 truck (Rescue 1) debt-free. This vehicle now serves rope and water rescue operations, tows the Multipurpose Emergency Response Vehicle (M.E.R.V), and supports Rescue 2. More recently, the Allen Hall Memorial Fund enabled the purchase of a 1995 International Heavy Rescue truck, which became the primary response unit, Rescue 2.
Volunteer Commitment
With about 15 active volunteers, the OCRT responds to a wide range of emergencies, including auto extrication, search and rescue, rope rescue, and swift water rescue. While not all calls are life-threatening, many are. These volunteers undergo extensive training and are ready 24/7 to respond when needed. Their work is not compensated financially — their reward is the knowledge they’ve helped those in critical need.
Support the Team
The Allen Hall Memorial Fund continues to support the team’s efforts. Directed by Cris Lunsford, Jack White, and Dave Keith, the fund ensures that all donations go directly toward purchasing and maintaining rescue equipment.
